I’m worried that I might feel threatened or intimidated by the other boxers
First of all, we are a box fitness gym where we achieve fitness through boxing exercises, skills and techniques. Secondly, we have the same codes and rules as England boxing and we will not tolerate certain behaviours and finally, boxers simply aren’t like this at all. Perhaps book a One2One for an introduction and a little confidence!
I struggle with my weight and fitness and don’t want to feel out of place or even let the group down
Most people at our gym have fat burning as their number one goal so I can assure you that we understand. The session plans are designed for all ages and abilities, yes we will push you but, you couldn’t possibly let the group down. The focus is on you and your goals so push as hard as you can to exceed any goals.
What do I need to start boxing?
Boxing is an extremely inexpensive sport, it always has been and always should be. To start just turn up in your own sportswear i.e. shorts, T-shirt, socks, trainers etc or a tracksuit. You’re gonna sweat so I wouldn’t worry about anything designer! We have some gloves and some ‘old’ wraps however, if you like boxing then you will want your own gloves and wraps as using ‘stinky’ gloves isn’t that nice! We sell gloves and wraps but, the Everlast range at Sports Direct is great for beginners. It’s not a bad idea if you learn how to skip though as many of our warm-ups (and warm-downs) involve skipping. We can teach you quickly so don’t worry.
What if I get good and want to undertake more sparring and perhaps box competitively?
Great, this is what we want to hear from young boxers. Laings doesn’t undertake a lot of sparring, we’re more about boxing fitness however, we would love to recommend and guide you to a good local boxing club if you have that talent. We do things correctly including stance and guard, footwork, throwing shots and defence work therefore, these clubs will be happy to develop your skills and techniques. However, there’s no harm in using Laings to keep you fit, maintain recovery and have the edge as fitness always wins.
I don’t like boxing at all or anymore. My dad makes me come and I don’t want to do it anymore.
Please ask your dad to speak to me. I will say this; if you do have a gift or talent for boxing then I do believe that there are ways to make it more interesting and rewarding however, if you are adamant that it’s not for you then I will then try and find a sport and fitness that suits you better because we need activity to keep physically fit and healthy. I won’t give up on you but, help support you and encourage your family to do the same. I don’t feel anyone should be “forced” to come to Laings.
I’m 15 years old, I’ve boxed before and keep myself fit. I feel that the Junior Sessions are not pushing my ability and need a new challenge.
Not to worry, let’s have a chat and if we agree there is absolutely no problem joining the senior sessions if your parents also agree.
I’m in a wheelchair and whilst I understand your gym is suitable, the boxing sessions are not entirely planned for my individual needs.
You are quite right, the session plans are varied and we do mix them up to include full body workouts however, we also have several session plans suited to those in wheelchairs (as well as other disabilities) and after speaking to you we simply get you focussed on your plan making you feel comfortable and ready to start hitting the bags and undertaking (for example) an upper body workout so that you can achieve your goals too.
